From Byron & Tasha Burrell

Hello Friends,

August is here, and it brings a little bit of everything — warm summer days, back-to-school routines, family vacations wrapping up, and the first little hints that fall is on the way.

August is a unique bridge between summer and autumn. It stands out for peak celestial events like the Perseid meteor shower, the famous Dog Days of summer, and as a popular time for vacations before the busy back-to-school season begins.

And let’s be honest — in Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas, August does not quietly leave summer behind. It usually says, “Not so fast, I still have some heat left!”

Fun August Dates to Remember

Here are a few lighthearted days to enjoy this month:

August 4 – National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day

Start the month on a sweet note with National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day. A warm chocolate chip cookie can solve many problems — at least temporarily.

August 8 – National Bowling Day

Grab some friends or family and see who still has their bowling skills. Just remember, gutter balls build character.

August 15 – National Relaxation Day

This is your official reminder to slow down, breathe, and rest. Yes, resting counts as productive.

August 16 – National Tell a Joke Day

Perfect timing after National Relaxation Day. Laughter really is good medicine.

August 20 – National Radio Day

Turn up your favorite station, enjoy a good song, and maybe sing along like nobody is listening.

August 25 – National Banana Split Day

Ice cream, bananas, toppings, and joy in a bowl. That sounds like a holiday worth celebrating.

Fresh Picks for August

August brings some wonderful seasonal fruits and vegetables. Here are a few favorites to enjoy while summer is still showing off.

Watermelon

Nothing cools you down like a cold slice of watermelon. Since watermelon is about 92% water, it is one of the most refreshing summer treats.

Blackberries & Blueberries

These summer berries are at their sweetest and are perfect for pies, smoothies, salads, or tossing into yogurt.

Zucchini & Summer Squash

These grow quickly in the warm sun and are great for grilling, baking into breads, or turning into noodles.

Sweet Corn

Fresh summer corn is crunchy, naturally sweet, and great for boiling, grilling, or cutting into salads.

Simple summer tip: If your plate has color, crunch, and something fresh from a local farmer’s market, you are off to a great start.

What Have We Been Up To?

Time Spent at Jack Evans Senior Center

Last month, we were blessed to spend time at the Jack Evans Senior Center, where Byron shared important information on how to stay safe with technology.

Technology makes it easier than ever to stay connected with family, manage finances, and access healthcare. However, it also creates opportunities for scammers.

Here are a few simple reminders that can help protect your identity, your finances, and your peace of mind:

  • Slow down before responding to unexpected calls, texts, or emails.

  • Never share personal or financial information with someone who contacts you unexpectedly.

  • Avoid clicking suspicious links, even if the message looks urgent.

  • Use strong, unique passwords for important accounts.

  • Enable two-factor authentication whenever possible.

  • Stop and verify anything that feels urgent, unusual, or too good to be true with someone you trust.

A few simple habits can go a long way in helping you stay protected.

And remember: scammers love urgency. Wisdom says, “Let me check on that first.”

Happy Birthday!

Happy Birthday to everyone celebrating a birthday in August!

We hope your month is filled with joy, laughter, good food, and people who make you feel loved and appreciated.

May this new year of life bring you blessings, peace, and plenty of reasons to smile.

Closing Thought

As August brings both summer fun and busy routines, we hope you take time to enjoy the little things — a good meal, a cool evening, a conversation with family, or a moment to simply rest.

Thank you for allowing us to serve you and your family. We are grateful for the opportunity to help individuals and families across Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas with guidance, support, and solutions that matter.

Wishing you a safe, joyful, and memorable August!

Blessings,
